Cycling in Ukraine’s Carpathians… see EU later. (1/4)

With an unexpected six days off and the weather tricking us into thinking it was getting warmer we decided to dust off our bikes and head out for our first trip of the year. As Sheena had not visited before, we took a train to explore the big beast in the east for a heavy dose…

    Embracing vulture culture…

When we crossed the border between India and Nepal, one of the first sights that greeted us was a massive vulture circling over a sandy river bed. It was the first vulture I have seen in the wild and an impressive sight, all the more important because of the severe decline in vulture populations in…

Tansen – mostly photos (and a video!)

Tansen is located on the main road between Butwal on the plains and Pokhara in the hills. It is a beautiful old medieval town with a maze of streets that are narrow and always seems to be going uphill, because they are so steep the centre has few (if any) cars. For some reason it…

    Bardia National Park

Namaste! Such a simple word and so important at the same time.We are greeted every day in Nepal by dozens upon dozens of people, from tiny toddlers to old ladies hauling back breaking loads, with massive smiles in this way. The problem is, to do it properly, you really should put your hands together and…

Agra; Holy Sites and Holi Festival

It was almost inevitable that we would end up in Agra at some stage; although we had both visited India before, neither of us had been to see it’s most famous of sites. Instantly recognisable and known as the ‘greatest monument to love’ in the world, our visit to the Taj Mahal was cemented when…

Hyderabad – starting a riot in a school.

Our arrival in Hyderabad involved another epic cycle across a huge city, the traffic, the noise and the heat combine to make urban cycling considerably uncomfortable – the suffocating fumes from bad engines fueled with even worse fuel must be what its like closing your garage door and sticking an exhaust pipe into the window.…

    Wakey, wakey!

Well Hallo, hej, halla, hej hej, tere! We’ve not been writing for a while, Sheena was teaching Irish to reindeer herders and Sam was sent to work fixing shoe laces for the Finish national wife carrying team. With these tasks now behind us we have found ourselves in the beautiful city of Tallinn. Despite our…

Some of Nepal’s hand painted signs…

Road signs in Europe are boring (except the Czech pedestrian crossing sign which we will try to dig out, the coolest street crossing sign ever), uniformly identical warnings churned out from some factory somewhere, the only variation over the whole continent is colour. Boring!
